Operation Shanela nets over 400 suspects in Gauteng crime crackdown
Law enforcement cracked down on crime in Sophiatown and Naledi during Operation Shanela, arresting over 400 suspects for serious offences including car hijacking, drug dealing, and gender-based violence.
Operation Shanela, involving law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, resulted in the arrest of 79 suspects for various crimes, including car hijacking, drug possession and dealing, selling liquor without a licence, attempted murder, and robbery.
The operation, which took place from May 14 to 15 across Sophiatown and Naledi policing precincts, led to the arrest of 334 wanted suspects for serious and violent crimes, including gender-based violence.

Some notable arrests include: two suspects arrested for car hijacking in Naledi; one suspect arrested for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle in Naledi; seven arrested for dealing in drugs in Sophiatown; and one suspect found in possession of drugs that include mandrax and crystal meth worth R28 500.

The operation involved various law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs, JMPD, Gauteng traffic wardens, and private security companies. The suspects will appear in various magistrate courts soon.
