A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment following a fatal stabbing that took place at a local tavern in Freedom Park in April 2021.
According to Eldorado Park SAPS, the incident occurred on Friday, 2021-04-02 at approximately 00:30 at Thembi’s Tavern, where the victim, Sabelo Mtshali (29), and his girlfriend were socialising, drinking and listening to music.
Eldorado Park SAPS media liaison officer Sergeant Fezeka Khobo confirmed that an argument broke out between the victim and the suspect, Neo Moyo, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.

“The altercation turned tragic when the suspect produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The victim collapsed at the scene,” said Khobo.
Mtshali was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital by his girlfriend and her father, where he was certified dead on arrival.
The investigation led by Detective Sergeant Johnny Molokeng resulted in the suspect being traced and arrested on the same day, April 2, 2021, at around 08:00.
Khobo further commended the investigating officer for his dedication.
“Molokeng worked tirelessly in gathering evidence and ensuring that the suspect was brought before the court without delay. This conviction reflects the commitment of our members in ensuring justice for victims,” she said.

On April 9, 2026, Moyo was convicted and sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment. The court imposed eight years for count one and five years for count two, with two years suspended.
Eldorado Park SAPS station commander Brigadier Mkhacani Maluleke has praised Molokeng for securing the conviction, stating that the outcome has removed a dangerous offender from the streets and brought closure to the victim’s family.
