JMPD arrests suspect after intercepting stolen VW Polo on M1

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officers arrested a suspect and recovered stolen medication and a laptop after intercepting a stolen VW Polo GTI on the M1 freeway.

JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit officers arrested a suspect following the recovery of a stolen vehicle on the M1 freeway.

While patrolling the route, officers received information from the control room and Tracker SA about a stolen VW Polo GTI travelling southbound towards Soweto. The vehicle had reportedly been stolen during a business robbery at the ThuThukani Medical Centre in Clayville.

Officers immediately responded and tracked the vehicle using GPS co-ordinates, which placed it near the M1 and Golden Highway off-ramp. The vehicle was then tactically intercepted and brought to a stop.

As officers approached, two men allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. A chase ensued, resulting in the arrest of one, while the other evaded arrest.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of several boxes of medication and a laptop believed to have been stolen during the robbery.

The arrested suspect faces charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property. He was detained at Mondeor Police Station, while the recovered vehicle was booked into the Aeroton SAPS vehicle pound.

The JMPD reiterated that lawlessness will not be tolerated in the City of Johannesburg.
