JMPD cracks down on illegal vehicle washing on public roads
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officers have enforced municipal by-laws against taxi drivers washing vehicles on public roads, warning that the practice poses safety and environmental risks.
The JMPD has taken action against taxi drivers found washing their vehicles on a public road in contravention of municipal by-laws.
According to a JMPD statement, the enforcement operation formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with the Public Roads and Miscellaneous By-laws, which prohibit the washing of vehicles on public roads.

Authorities warned that the practice can damage road infrastructure, obstruct traffic flow, pollute stormwater systems and create safety hazards for other road users.
JMPD officers emphasised that compliance with municipal regulations is mandatory and that vehicles should only be washed at designated and approved facilities.
The department has urged motorists and public transport operators to adhere to the bylaws to avoid enforcement action, stressing that the regulations are intended to protect public infrastructure, road users and the environment.
