Suspect arrested after police chase in Eldorado Park

A man was arrested for alleged bribery after reportedly offering a police officer R200 to prevent his brother from being detained.

A second suspect was arrested for alleged bribery at Eldorado Park Police Station on September 28, following the arrest of his brother earlier that day.

According to Sergeant Fezeka Khobo, at about 18:45, a Crime Prevention Unit member was at the police station opening a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs against the first suspect.

Another male approached the police officer inside the police station and identified himself as the younger brother of the first alleged suspect.

He allegedly told the police officer not to book his brother and said he would organise money to give to the police.

The police officer warned him to leave the police station and go home, otherwise he would be arrested for bribery, but he allegedly refused to leave, saying he could not leave his brother.

The suspect then allegedly took out a R200 note from his right-hand pocket and handed it to the police officer, adding that he was still waiting for more money. The police officer placed him under arrest for bribery and explained his constitutional rights.

The R200 bribery exhibit was placed inside a forensic bag and booked as part of the evidence.

Both suspects are in police custody and will appear in court soon.

The first suspect faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as drugs, while the second suspect faces a charge of bribery and corruption.

Eldorado Park SAPS station commander Brigadier Mkhacani Maluleke commended the member for his integrity, refusing to be bribed and removing an illegal firearm from the community.
