MEC initiate outreach programs for local SMMES

Informative presentations from the Gauteng office of consumer affairs and GDED were conducted for local SMMEs to learn and acquire important information.

Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Tasneem Motara recently initiated an outreached programme, where local SMMEs were educated about essential services offered by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) in Protea Glen.

According to MEC Motara, the programme is set to concentrate on townships, informal settlements, and hostels because these are the areas where the majority of people reside.

“We also have various entities that offer different programmes such as, SMME development and training as well as funding loans, so as to help empower our local SMMEs,” said MEC Motara.

She added that in order to eliminate red tape for the liquor licenses, her department has implemented measures where automatic systems will be introduced in order to help people apply online and also be able to track the conclusion time of their applications.

An unhappy resident, Fanyana Nhleko said these kinds of meetings are nothing new to the public.

Every time when national and provincial elections are about to approach such meetings usually take place.

“I feel like this is just a talk shop, our government is always ducking and diving when it comes to proving us with answers. Currently we are facing the issue of illegal foreigners opening business without proper documentations but our government is not prepared to act against them,” said Nhleko.
