No reconnection for illegal water users in Lenasia

This comes after Johannesburg Water embarked on an operation to clamp down on the unlawful connections in the area.

Johannesburg Water (JW) has reiterated its stance on not reconnecting illegal water connections in the Phumla Mqashi informal settlement in Lenasia south.

This comes after a successful disconnection operation in the area on November 12.

The entity’s efforts to optimise water distribution in the area have yielded positive results, with a significant increase in water levels recorded at the Lenasia High-Level Reservoir.

This milestone marks a major step in reducing non-revenue water (NRW), a long-standing challenge for JW.

“We are pleased to see the positive impact of our interventions in the area,” said a JW spokesperson.

“However, we remain firm in our stance on not reconnecting illegal water connections, as they perpetuate inequality and unfairness to paying customers.”

Despite disconnecting illegal connections, JW has restored water tank services in the area to ensure the community has access to basic services. To date, they have deployed 36 water tankers, with an additional nine planned for deployment.

JW continues to engage with the relevant ward councillors and community leaders to ensure they meet the community’s water needs.
