Festive season safety tips for kids home alone

While the classic movie Home Alone may be a comedy favourite, the reality of children facing potential dangers at home is no laughing matter.

With schools closing and parents still at work, many children will be spending more time alone at home during the festive season.

While the classic movie Home Alone may be a comedy favourite, the reality of children facing potential dangers at home is no laughing matter.

“Apart from the criminal element, there are other dangers that lurk around the home, like fires or medical emergencies,” she warns.

Hattingh emphasizes the importance of teaching children the basics of home security, including not opening the gate for strangers and knowing how to use the home’s security system.

She also advises parents to invest in remote security monitoring, secure access solutions, and fire detection systems.

In addition to home security, Hattingh stresses the importance of teaching children other safety tips.
Safety tips

• Being alert and aware of their surroundings when walking or playing outside.
• Not engaging with strangers.
• Locking security gates and removing keys.
• Activating alarms and garden beams when alone at home.
• Having emergency numbers saved on speed dial.
• Telling parents about suspicious activity in the neighbourhood.
• Staying away from swimming pools without adult supervision.

Hattingh reminds parents that their children’s safety and security should never be compromised, even during the festive season.

“Your children are precious gifts, and it’s essential to prioritise their safety and well-being,” she concludes.
