Workshop equips youth with skills in Kopanong Centre

The training room was buzzed with energy as young job seekers from across the area gathered for a transformative work-readiness workshop.

The Lesego Tau Education Foundation hosted a Work-Readiness Empowerment Workshop on January 18 at Kopanong Community Centre.

The purpose of the workshop was to equip the community with essential skills for formal employment, covered a wide range of topics designed to demystify the professional world and prepare attendees to excel in their career pursuits.

The training room was buzzed with energy as young job seekers from across the area gathered for a transformative work-readiness workshop.

The workshop commenced with an engaging session on the importance of being intentional about formal employment.

Participants were urged to shift their mindset from seeking jobs out of necessity to strategically pursuing careers that align with their strengths, values, and long-term goals.

Project manager at LTEF, Makhotso Motswana said their skilled team leader delved into key employer expectations, shedding light on company culture and policies.

“Attendees were encouraged to familiarize themselves with workplace norms, emphasizing that understanding and adapting to these expectations is critical to thriving in any professional setting.

“One of the workshop’s highlights was a practical session on writing compelling CVs and cover letters.

“Participants learned to tailor their applications to specific job postings, ensuring relevance and impact.

“By the end of the session, attendees were equipped with actionable strategies to stand out in competitive applicant pools,” said Motswana.

A dynamic discussion on interpersonal relationships in the workplace emphasized the crucial difference between friends and colleagues. Attendees explored scenarios illustrating the boundaries of professional and casual interactions.

The session further addressed communication styles, contrasting casual versus formal communication, and highlighting the professional use of social media as a critical tool for building a reputable online presence.

Participants were challenged to dismantle the entitlement mentality often associated with job seeking.

“Lesego Tau Education Foundation stands as a testament to the influence of education and empowerment in bridging the gap between ambition and opportunity.

“With newfound knowledge and skills, participants were poised to approach the job market with confidence and purpose.

“We thank you ever so much for the City of Johannesburg Sports and Recreation Directorate for always supporting our programme implementation,” further explained Motswana.

The workshop was praised as a resounding success by participants.

One the participant, Thato Mhlari said, “Thank you for giving us the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge.

“Not only did I learn how to better prepare myself for the workplace, but the workshop also motivated me on a personal level.

“The workshop reignited a spirit of ambition and a hunger for opportunities that I thought were long gone”
