MMC offers R100 000 for any leads in the murder of Rea Vaya bus driver
Outrage and condolences following killings of two Rea Vaya bus drivers in Mapetla and Protea Glen.
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is reeling following the tragic killings of two Rea Vaya bus drivers in Mapetla and Protea Glen, Soweto, on February 3.
The murders have left a community in shock and mourning, as the lives of two innocent men were taken in an attack that has been described as nothing short of barbaric.
Kenny Kunene, the CoJ’s MMC for Roads and Transport, expressed his deep sorrow and condemnation over the incident.

In a heartfelt statement, Kunene expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, colleagues, and friends.
“I am mortified and distraught by the abominable killings of two Rea Vaya bus drivers,” Kunene stated.
“I extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to the families, friends, colleagues, and the community at large for this heavy loss.”
Describing the killings as a “declaration of war” on both the government and residents of Johannesburg, particularly those in Soweto, Kunene called on the community to assist the police in bringing those responsible to justice.
“I pray and plead with you to assist the police. We have barbarians who have killed our people and caused trauma throughout Soweto and the Rea Vaya community,” he added.
Kunene’s call for action went beyond words. He pledged to commit a personal reward of R100 000 to anyone who could provide information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
He made it clear that this financial commitment was not from the CoJ or the Department of Transport but a personal pledge, underscoring his deep resolve to ensure the criminals’ capture.
“This is not money from the CoJ that I am committing. It’s not money from the Department of Transport.
It is money that I am committing as Kenny Kunene to show the commitment that I have in making sure that these barbarians are brought to book,” Kunene said, emphasizing his commitment to the case.

The MMC also stressed the importance of cooperation with the police.
“As long as the police have confirmed that indeed they have evidence linking those that have been arrested to this barbaric act, I will make the money available to whoever assisted the police,” Kunene confirmed.
