Gift of the Givers community liaison officer Clifford Mabe said the visit was to give back to the community, particularly the elderly, who are being commemorated for the role they play in the community.

“We came to deliver food parcels to the elderly as part of a programme we are running called hunger alleviation. Mthembu identified this location because she witnessed the struggles of residents of this place,” he said.

Mthembu told Urban News the city is actively involved in the hunger alleviation programme.

“The back-to-school programme has now come to an end. We are now moving on to the hunger alleviation programme, which focuses on orphans and older adults, especially those raising their grandchildren alone while unemployed and depending on social grants.

“Each month, we have new initiatives and we go to our communities so they can benefit from these programmes,” she said.

On behalf of the community ward councillor, Keke Tabane extended his gratitude to the Gift of the Givers for what they have done for his community.

“I am thankful the foundation arrived at the appropriate time. As you may recall, we spent January recovering from the December celebrations and purchasing stationery.

“I am happy that now the elderly will have food for their families. “This ward is among the least fortunate in CoJ. I appreciate the speaker identifying it as a beneficiary,” he said.
