Eldos church launches support group against substance abuse

Find freedom from addiction with Mount Carmel Ministry's support group, offering guidance and confidential help for individuals and families affected.

Mount Carmel Ministry (MCM) from Circle Road, Extension 5 in Eldorado Park has taken a proactive step in addressing the growing concern of substance abuse in the community.

Led by Pastor Mike and his wife, Carmen Bobby, the church launched a support group two years ago, specifically designed to provide a safe and confidential space for individuals and families affected by addiction including substance abuse, drug abuse and pornography addiction.

The support group, which meets every Thursday evening, is facilitated by a team of five pastors and two sisters who have undergone informal training to provide guidance and support.

According to Pastor Stafford Broonley from MCM, the group is open to anyone affected by substance abuse, regardless of their religious affiliation.

Sister Rozita Abdullah, one of the facilitators, said the support group is not just for those struggling with addiction but also extends to families and loved ones impacted by it.

“The group uses a holistic approach, incorporating Biblical teachings, counselling and accountability to help individuals overcome addiction. The facilitators also provide one-on-one support and guidance to those who require it,” Abdullah said.

MCM has partnered with Comeback Mission, a rehabilitation centre in Cape Town to provide additional support and resources for those in need.

The church urges anyone affected by substance abuse to come forward and seek help.

“We are here to support and guide you through this journey,” said Pastor Michael Cullinan.

Broonley said the support group was initiated by Pastor Ulrich Strauss, a reformed gangster, alcoholic and drug addict, during his visit to Eldorado Park.

His visit was followed by an official engagement at the church where he spoke and motivated many people.

Since then, Strauss has continued to support the church by sharing advice, study material and offering rehab referrals through Lofdal International and Lofdal Restoration Centre.
