Johannesburg EMS responds to trapped zama-zamas underground
A search and rescue operation is underway for the illegal miners in Roodepoort.

A search and rescue operation is underway as Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku joined the efforts of the Johannesburg EMS, the SAPS Search and Rescue and the Gauteng EMS at the Rand Lease shaft in Roodepoort, where zama zamas are trapped.
When attempting a rescue, the EMS could only go 15m before noticing an oxygen deficiency.

Paramedics, search and rescue experts and law officials say it is complex and challenging and requires careful planning and co-ordination to ensure the safety of those involved.
