Decomposed bodies found near abandoned mine in Diepkloof
Unofficial reports suggest that a security guard patrolling an enclosed mine area at Shaft 17 may have been the first to find the bodies.
Police are searching for clues and piecing together the events surrounding the discovery of six decomposed bodies in Soweto earlier today.
Authorities have launched a murder investigation after the bodies were found near an unused mine in Diepkloof, near Nasrec, on February 14.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the victims are suspected to be illegal miners.

“It is reported that a man was fetching firewood when he noticed a body in the veld and alerted a security officer, who then called the police.
“Upon searching the area, officers discovered five more decomposed bodies,” said Masondo.

At this stage, the motive for the killings remains unclear.
Police are working to identify the victims and notify their next of kin, while investigations continue.
