Users of solar energy urged to register before March 31

Many households and businesses installed rooftop solar at the height of load-shedding. Eskom says it will fine unregistered solar panel users.

Eskom calls on businesses and households using their installed solar panels to register them because it is a National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) requirement.

Solar installations of up to 50kW could qualify for exemptions from registration-related costs until the March 31, 2026, deadline.

Eskom encourages solar panel users to take advantage of this period because failing to do so could cost one a fine R50 000, which the household or business owner must pay.

“This decision was in response to the Energy Action Plan and supported incentives such as the tax rebate for solar installations offered by SARS.

“This was an effort by Eskom and other government entities to help South Africans lessen the impact of load-shedding on their daily lives,” says an Eskom press release.

Eskom says this campaign will ensure households and businesses enjoy their small-scale embedded generators (SSEGs) while adhering to the NERSA regulations.

Municipal-supplied customers must get help from the local power suppliers for the relevant application processes and requirements.

“Generators that operate entirely off-grid and are not connected to Eskom’s electricity network are not required to register.

“However, owners must provide proof that their systems function independently of Eskom’s supply,” ads Eskom.
