JMPD joins hands with entities to clamp down on non- compliance

This multi-agency operation, conducted at the intersection of Union Avenue and Boundary Road, aimed to address concerns regarding the safety and legality of learner transport vehicles.

The JMPD Community Outreach Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Community Safety, SAPS Social Crime, Gauteng Traffic Police, and JMPD Region G, participated in an operation targeting learner transport compliance in Eldorado Park.

This multi-agency operation, conducted at the intersection of Union Avenue and Boundary Road, aimed to address concerns regarding the safety and legality of learner transport vehicles.

The officials were involved in the operation, which focused on stopping, searching, and inspecting learner transport vehicles for compliance with road traffic regulations.

The operation revealed significant violations, resulting in the issuance of 32 citations for a range of offences, including:

• Lack of professional driving permits
• Unlicensed motor vehicles
• Damaged windscreens (driver’s side)
• Worn-out tyres
• Overloading
• Seat belt violations
• Number plate irregularities
• Expired vehicle license discs

“Of particular concern was the widespread issue of overloading, which resulted in numerous learners being left stranded at their designated pick-up points,” said spokesperson of JMPD, Xolani Fihla.

“Recognising the urgency of the situation, the JMPD and its partners activated support from local learner transport associations, Gets and Upet, who promptly assisted in safely transporting the affected learners to their respective schools.

“Furthermore, to address broader concerns, the JMPD and its partners conducted visibility patrols at several parks in Eldorado Park, Freedom Park, and Kliptown.

“These patrols aimed to monitor learner activity during bunking classes and to address reports of learners and transport drivers engaging in illegal activities, such as smoking dagga.”
