Cable theft affects locals in gloomy and cold weather

Residents of Ward 39 have been without electricity for hours due to cable theft.

After hours without electricity, residents of Ward 39 took it upon themselves to assist Eskom technicians in making sure that the stolen cable is replaced.

At around 01:00 on April 2, residents of Ward 39 in Meadowlands, Soweto, were largely affected as a cable was stolen at Killarney which left them without electricity for approximately 12 hours.

What the men and technicians from Eskom had dug up for the replacement of the cable.

The areas that were affected were Killarney, Orlando West, Mzimhlophe uptown and Endlovini, Orlando Gardens and the former Women’s Hostel.

A resident of Orlando West, Anna Nonki, said: “Those who are responsible for this do not consider that it affects us all largely.

“I live with asthma and me standing here inhaling dust may affect me, not to mention how cold I am,’’ said Nonki.

The community came out in numbers to help with the digging and for moral support as technicians were hard at work replacing the cable.

The men from the community affected were seen assisting with digging.

The councillor of Ward 39 Lefa Modise was there as well.

“There has been progress as some areas now have electricity and we are now waiting for the rest of the areas to have power restored, the community is hands-on, literally and for that I commend them.”

Power was restored at 01:00 on April 3.

The men came out in numbers to support the process of replacing cables.
