Cable theft remains a major issue in Eldorado Park

Marks Netshirungulu of City power urges communities to take action against illegal cable activities in their communities.

The Eldorado Park SAPS management and the Second-hand Goods Unit (FLASH) conducted a meeting at the Eldorado Park Police Station on March 4 to discuss the burning issue of cable theft.

The challenge of cable theft not only affects the transmission of electricity in the country, also affects businesses that rely on electricity for functioning and productivity.

Tshifhiwa Netshirungulu from City Power (CP) presented a second-hand awareness campaign where he spoke about their challenges in various communities, educating residents on resalable and non-resalable cables.

He further spoke about some areas where CP faces high rates of cable theft.

Nancefield industrial informal settlement is one of the most affected.

Sergeant Fezeka Khoba Eldorado Park SAPS communication officer said Marks shared with the business people and the police how to report cable theft, including the relevant steps and documentation needed by business people to ensure that they comply with the law and avoid buying illegal cables.

She elaborated on the impact that cable theft has on policing and crime in Eldos.

“Crime increases when cables are stolen, leading us to stretch our resources. Meaning we have to recall members from working in the sectors to patrol and guard areas where cable theft is prevalent.”
