Residents engage CoJ in IDP meeting in Orlando

The session brought together City officials, Members of the Mayoral Committee and Headline Chairpersons of various Section 79 committees.

The City of Johannesburg Legislature, led by speaker of counsel Nobuhle Mthembu, successfully hosted an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) public engagement session for Region D residents at the Orlando Communal Hall on April 12.

Residents engaged directly with city leadership, voicing a range of service delivery concerns. Key issues raised included inadequate waste removal, deteriorating infrastructure, illegal dumping, and safety challenges in various wards.

A recurring concern was the lack of implementation of previously promised projects, such as multipurpose centers and bridges as well as the omission of Ward 36 priorities from the current IDP draft.

Mthembu reaffirmed the city’s commitment to inclusive governance.

“This platform was created by the Legislature to provide the executive with an opportunity to engage with communities and outline the projects planned for their wards, as well as explain how the draft IDP budget was developed.”

She also emphasised that the IDP sessions are one of the essential tools of participatory democracy.

Several community members expressed frustration over poor interdepartmental coordination, which often leaves residents without clear support when seeking municipal services.

Health service delivery also came under scrutiny, with residents pointing to a shortage of medication at local clinics and hospitals and the growing impact of substance abuse among the youth.

The Legislature stressed it remained committed to championing public participation as a cornerstone of transparent, responsive, and accountable governance.
