Red Bull skateboarder Brandon Valjalo and friends marked Go Skateboarding Day at the Pimville DIY Skatepark in Soweto on June 13.
Go Skateboarding Day, an annual international celebration launched in 2004, promotes skateboarding, fosters a community, and gets locals involved in the sport.
At the Pimville DIY Skatepark, Valjalo brought together skaters, beginners and curious onlookers in an adrenaline-filled atmosphere.

“This event is about bringing the skateboarding community together – everyone is welcome – as we celebrate the sport and the day. I’ll also be donating what I can and helping anyone who needs their board fixed,” said Valjalo.
He also praised Red Bull for building the DIY skatepark, saying it provides a safe and welcoming space for the community to skate.
The day drew local youngsters who skated, competed for prizes and honed their skills.
Valjalo told the Urban News he took up the sport to stay out of trouble and turned it into a successful career.
Female skateboarder Thato Moet said she’s glad the park was renovated.

“I used to come here when I was younger, and it was in poor condition,” she added.
“The renovations are great for skateboarders. The improved obstacles make it much safer, and the park is always busy, as you can see all the children skating. It keeps us off the streets,” said Moet.
Valjalo said he will be in India on June 21 to celebrate Go Skateboarding Day.
