French students explore Soweto in cultural exchange visit

A group of French students from the CGCV visited Soweto for four days to experience South African culture, food and music as part of a summer exchange programme.

Community members welcomed them with open arms, and they later indulged in dagwoods and learnt how to wash their hands in a dish before eating.

CGCV leader and teacher Pauline Raimbaud said they could not wait to see and experience Soweto.

“We are here to learn about the differences between countries, from the food, communities and how things are done differently from where we are from.

“So far, my favourite moments and what stood out for me is seeing the children from the communities and sharing moments with them; playing games and us trying to have conversations with them,” she said.

“I am full. The food at KFF was very delicious. We came from a bike tour and were hungry. The staff here have been nothing short of excellent and welcoming,” said student Gasmia Marwan.

The group danced to amapiano and shared music from France.

Mbali Tshabalala, the owner of KFF, said, “The group has been here for two days and has been open to eating what I prepared for them. I am glad someone not from Soweto enjoys kasi food. This is also an amazing opportunity.”
