Protea South seniors celebrate heritage with pride

Celebrating heritage is important for the elderly as it connects them to their roots, reminds them of their journey and gives them a chance to take pride in being South African.

The Protea South Senior Citizen Club (PSSCC) brought heritage to life with a colourful celebration, as members dressed in traditional attire and shared delicious home-cooked cultural meals on September 23 at the Multipurpose Hall, Protea South.

Chairperson of PSSCC, Rebecca Tloubatla, told Urban News that celebrating heritage is important for the elderly as it connects them to their roots, reminds them of their journey and gives them a chance to take pride in being South African.

“This day means a lot to us. It reminds us of how we grew up and how our forefathers honoured their traditions. We felt the need to celebrate it so that we don’t lose touch with our culture and where we come from.

Assistant chairperson, Moipone Kgakgathiba and chairperson of PSSCC, Rebecca Tloubatla.

“Even though urban life and modern civilization seem to be swallowing us, we must remind both the current and future generations that we have roots,” she said.

She further emphasised the importance of instilling the love of culture and nature in the younger generation.

Assistant chairperson Moipone Kgakgathiba said it is vital to celebrate heritage as it helps preserve their culture and keep it from going astray.

“Today, with the elderly, we saw how valuable it is to celebrate heritage. Everyone participated in the event, enjoying traditional dances and having fun.

“I hope that next year, we can involve our children so they can learn about their cultures, especially since they are now growing up in a more modern, urbanized world,” said Kgakgathiba.

Elderly attendee Marvis Maceke said the day was amazing and that she thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
“Today was so much fun as senior citizens.

“We enjoyed ourselves while celebrating and remembering our roots. We danced, shared stories, and savoured traditional meals. I’m truly happy I attended and felt proud of our heritage,” she said.
