Learners step up as they graduate from legacy programme
Dowling Primary School learners celebrated their growth and readiness for high school through the Monty Sandows Legacy Transition Programme.
Dowling Primary School hosted a graduation ceremony with the Westbury Community Development Initiative (Westcode) on October 17.
The event celebrated the completion of the Monty Sandows Legacy Transition Programme at Westbury.
The initiative, launched in May, helps Grade Seven learners manage the challenges of moving from primary to high school.

The programme is inspired by the late Monty Sandows, whose vision was to support learners through one of the most critical phases of their academic journey.

Alongside him, Dr Frew Benson, a co-founder of Westcode, played a key role in shaping the programme.
According to Westcode chairperson Stephen Segeels, both men died last October, only weeks apart.
“Drawing from their combined expertise and passion for education, the programme addresses academic, behavioural and social hurdles commonly faced by learners entering secondary school,” said Segeels.
Through discussions and activities, participants explored goal setting, self-image, time management, dealing with peer pressure and identifying positive role models.
Learners shared some of their biggest concerns, including bullying, violence and adapting to new academic demands.

As part of its ongoing development, Westcode confirmed that the eight-week pilot will be reviewed and refined before being rolled out to more primary schools in the area.
The graduation ceremony celebrated the achievements of all Grade Seven learners, who received certificates of participation.
The widows and families of Sandows and Benson were also honoured for their loved ones’ lasting contributions.
Guests were treated to a play about bullying, performed by Bridgitte Munnik and her Mashup students, followed by refreshments sponsored by Women of Wisdom.
Westcode media communication liaison Anthony van Louw thanked the principals, teachers, sponsors and community members who supported the programme.
“Our mission remains to empower learners and strengthen our communities through education and collaboration,” he said.
