Eldorado Park police deny assault claims after clash over illegal structures
Officers under fire over Ext 6 standoff, as SAPS shifts blame to “unruly behaviour” by residents.
Eldorado Park SAPS has denied allegations that police assaulted residents during the attempted removal of illegal structures in Ext 6 last week, insisting that officers acted only in self-defence.
In response to claims from community members that women, children and local leaders were pepper-sprayed and assaulted while defending their homes, SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Fezeka Khobo said police were ‘appalled by the unruly behaviour’ they encountered on the scene.

According to Khobo, officers had engaged peacefully with residents from Monday to Wednesday (October 20-22).
Police said residents had agreed to provide the necessary legal documents they claimed were pending, but none were produced.

She explained that SAPS members were assisting JMPD, which is mandated to handle land invasions. Tensions allegedly escalated when residents attacked officers while they were performing their duties.
“The police were merely defending themselves,” the statement read.

“No one is above the law, and anyone who commits any form of crime will be brought to book — especially for attacking police while they are performing their duties.”
The statement marks the first official police response following Wednesday’s confrontation, during which Ward 18 Councillor Juwairiya Kaldine intervened and demanded a court order before any eviction could proceed.
Residents maintain that law enforcement acted unlawfully without a court order, as required under the Prevention of Illegal Eviction (PIE) Act.
