St Ives Primary raises funds to complete nutrition centre

Funds raised from the Water Fun Day will help build walls and furnish the school’s nutrition centre.

St Ives Primary School invites parents to support a fundraiser to complete its nutrition centre project.

The November 22 event will be held at the school premises on 4 St Ives Street, Ext 1, Klipspruit West.

School principal Ilana Herredin said that, as a no-fee school, they rely heavily on creative fundraising to bridge the gaps left by limited departmental funding.

Excitement runs high as children take turns on the water slide during the 2024 fundraiser.

“Our latest initiative aims to complete the construction of our nutrition centre into a proper cafeteria, where our learners can eat with dignity, protected from the wind, rain and sun,” said Herredin.

“We have the roof up, and with the success of our upcoming Water Fun Day, we hope to raise enough funds to build the walls and, eventually, furnish the space with tables and chairs.”

She added that the project is about more than just infrastructure, but also about instilling values in the learners, saying it teaches them to take pride in their school and give back.

“For example, our Grade Sevens used their Entrepreneur’s Day profits to fund the paving, painting and purchasing school equipment. It is a legacy they leave behind for future generations.”

Speaking about the fundraiser, she said the Water Fun Day is a joyful way to end the year and a safe, school-based event where every child can take part.

She said they plan to have 32 fun activities, from large water slides to inflatables for both junior and senior learners.

“Our teachers will be on duty throughout to ensure everyone’s safety. This is a community effort, every small contribution counts towards giving our children a better and more dignified learning environment.”
