Jabulani police urge parents to be vigilant during festive season

Parents have been urged to keep children in arm's reach at any shopping centre after police reported a spike in kidnappings over the holiday period.

As the festive season begins, Jabulani Police have urged parents and caregivers to be extra vigilant with their children, warning that this period often sees an increase in child kidnappings at busy shopping centers.

Station commander Lefa Tsotetsi said many families visit malls to purchase clothes and other festive essentials, creating opportunities for criminals who take advantage of crowded and distracted environments.

“This is the time when children are most vulnerable. Parents walk with their children in busy malls, and suspects may use that opportunity to kidnap or lure them away,” Tsotetsi said.

He urged parents to ensure their children stay close at all times and avoid situations where youngsters could get lost.

“Please hold your child’s hand or keep them in sight. Do not let them wander alone in shops,” he added.

Tsotetsi said police will continue patrolling hotspot areas and responding to any suspicious behavior. However, he emphasized that child safety starts at home and within families.

“We appeal to the community to work with us. Your child’s safety must always come first,” he said.
