Soweto sports foundation hosts walk against GBV

Amabhujwa Foundation brought residents together for a 5km walk, aerobics session and friendly soccer match to promote awareness of gender-based violence.

The Amabhujwa Foundation recently hosted a family fun day for the community of Soweto at large at a local sports ground in Orlando, Soweto.

The day was aimed at bringing a light spirit into the community following the GBV scourge in communities and the world at large.

The day started off with a 5km walk, with community members demonstrating with placards that called for an end to GBV and for men to protect women.

Mlungisi Ngcobo, one of the founders of the Amabhujwa Foundation, said: “We decided to have this initiative as a way to keep fit while displaying and showing our support to the women. This is a way to show the female figures in our communities that should they feel the need to go on their walks or runs, we are behind them and will not hesitate to protect them.”

Amabhujwa Foundation is aimed at honing soccer and netball talent in communities, this as a way of also providing an escape for young boys and girls in the community from ills such as drugs, alcohol and crime.

They shared that they are all about supporting the community the best way they know how and not only on the field, hence the movement.

Thulani Nkosi, a player of Amabhujwa and community leader, told Urban News that he was in support of the initiative in raising awareness.

He also added that such actions or movements need to be led by men, as they are to show that they are not in support of the heinous acts of killing women.

“This is a good initiative of bringing together the community to stand in solidarity. There are also children here and we hope that especially the boy children learn from us, the older men, to protect women of our communities. I commend the foundation for this movement,” said Kabelo Mashinini, a community member.

The day ended with a match between Amabhujwa and Brothers United going head-to-head, with Amabhujwa taking the cup with a score of 2-1.
