Freedom Park High gets 10th position at the U19 cup

Freedom Park High School finished in 10th position in this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.

Freedom Park High School finished in 10th position in this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.

This after being knocked out in the national finals of this lucrative competition.

For its 19 year-old player, Lungile Leribe playing in the national finals of this competition was an opportunity of a lifetime.

He said getting to the national finals was a great achievement and they thought they could win the grand prize, but were not prepared for the high level of football that they met.

“It was tough for all of us especially the first day where we were tired from travelling and were not in form so we didn’t manage to score a goal on that day.

“Looking at our performance we didn’t play badly, our defence was solid but we lacked the ability to create and score goals,” said Leribe.

The highlight of the tournament for the school was that they managed to finish above their fellow representatives, Sebetwane High School in the final standings.

Sebetwane finished in 15th position.

Freedom Park’s coach, Pule Diale said he is proud of the team and is looking forward to coming back next year.

He said he still believes that his boys played exceptionally well and it is just that they missed out on opportunities to score goals.

“The various provinces all brought something different to the tournament.

“Clapham played the best but that’s understandable because they have the best coaches and the best facilities.

“We learnt the value of ball-control and possession at the tournament and our problem was not being able to score goals,” said Diale.

Rietvale High School is the overall champion of this competition.
