WATCH: Let’s do more to keep our kids off the streets

The first week of the winter school holidays was filled with fun activities for school goers in the hope of keeping them from being bored and off the streets.

Jesse Maart, who is a local rugby coach in the Eldorado Park community, started the programme so children can keep busy and be productive during the school holidays.

The week-long holiday programme took place last week from 8 am to 1 pm at the Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park, Extension Six. There were many activities for the youngsters to take part in.

“Even though I am a rugby coach, this programme focuses on other sporting codes as well. Monday was game day, here children could play run-the-sack, egg races and fun water activities.

“Tuesday was a tag rugby festival where the children participated in tag rugby matches and coaching. Wednesday’s theme was World Cup soccer, Thursday was movie and popcorn day and Friday, the last day, was presentation day- here the children had to prepare a presentation themed ‘My South African dream’,” said Maart.

Learners had the opportunity to interact with each other and made new friends. In order to prepare for the presentation, they were divided into groups and were tasked to discuss how their presentation would be presented.

“This is to teach children how to be creative. They were allowed to read poems, do plays and prepare dance routines,” said Maart.

All the participants agreed that the programme was fun filled and that they truly enjoyed being around their peers and coach Jesse.

“Being here is so much fun, better than sitting at home doing nothing. I wish we could come back next week,” said 13-year-old Lamick Johnson.
