Women in sports gain career and financial skills at Momentum summit

Momentum hosted the third annual Women Who Make Moves in Sports Summit, bringing together athletes, experts and leaders to empower women in sports.

Momentum hosted the third annual Women Who Make Moves in Sports Summit at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Business School on August 8.

It was a two-day programme, with the second day continuing on August 9.

The aim was to celebrate top-performing athletes in SA, provide them with tools to support their careers and explore ways to generate income within and outside their sports.

The summit featured masterclasses led by experts in sports, law, finance and branding, which explored key elements of sustainable success in brand building, including crafting a credible public image on social media, negotiating with sponsors, safeguarding rights, leveraging AI as a valuable tool, and managing career and finances by setting clear long-term goals.

According to Ntokozo Madonsela, the chief marketing officer at Momentum, they need women who can represent them nationally and globally and be financially astute.

“We are aware that financial conversations can be overwhelming, but we believe that elevating women in sports to prominent positions in society is important because we equip them with the skills they need to manage their money effectively,” she said.

Dumisani Chauke, the HoD of sports at the Tshwane University of Technology, stated, “I’ve always been passionate about sports, and it has offered me opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

“Women in sports must be unapologetic about their value as athletes because companies and agencies often profit from our talent, and we’re left with nothing after retirement. One thing athletes need to understand is their value and how to monetise it.”

“This initiative was a great place to network and meet like-minded individuals to learn from, which aligns perfectly with my passion for uplifting and empowering women in sports across the continent,” said Zandile Yaze, the sports manager at The Leverage Corporation.

The fourth annual celebration will be hosted again on August 8 and 9, 2026, at the GIBS Business School, with the theme She Owns Her Success, promising to be even bigger and more impactful.
