Suspect denied bail

Magistrate feels that the release of the applicant on bail is not in the interest of justice.

The second suspect in the shooting of Luke Tibbetts appeared in the Newlands court yesterday.

Sergeant Diedelof Fourie told the court that they had an argument on the day of the shooting.

The court heard from the eyewitness confirming that the suspect has pointed the firearm first.

Omphile Kedijang the lawyer of the suspect who is accused of pointing of a firearm  said: “The applicant is not the sort of person who would cause the death of Luke Tibbetts. He was shot at and is a complainant in the matter. He wants justice done.”

Fourie said the suspect should be refused bail as he could also intimidate witnesses.

“It is a small community and everybody knows everybody so there’s a chance that they will meet in the streets,” said Fourie.

The magistrate said: “The court is satisfied that the release of the applicant on bail is not in the interest of justice. He will remain in custody.”

The case is postponed to September 3.
