Local crowned Mrs Africa

The crowning event of the 2013 Miss, Mrs and Mr Africa pageant was held on June 23 at the ACPP Hall In Pretoria, in which Springs resident Heidi Botes won the title of Mrs Africa 2013.

Heidi, who has been modelling for over 20 years says that winning the Mrs Africa 2013 title is the first big title she has won.

“Wow, what an honour to be part of the Pageants SA family, something I never thought would happen to me”.

Proudly Springs winner Heidi attended Hoër Meisieskool Hugenote and matriculated in 1994. With a full-time job as an internal auditor, she still finds time to organise her own pageants, which she has been doing for the past six years.

For the pageant, competitors had to represent their forefathers and this encouraged them to start looking into their heritage and culture.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this theme, ” says Heidi. “I decided to go as Heidi, a fictional girl from the German Swiss Alps, as my forefathers are originally from Germany and my maiden name is Von Brandis. I had the Heidi dress made as per the TV programme. It was nice to see the different cultures from Holland, France, Egypt and even South Africa.”

Heidi’s son, Brandon Berends, who has been modelling for the past year and is in matric at Springs Boys’ High, is the current Mr Junior SA Gauteng 2013 and was in the Mr and Miss Africa pageant as well, winning the title of first Prince Mr Junior Africa 2013.

“It was a lovely experience doing a pageant with my son. I am a very proud mother,” she says.

As winner of the pageant, Heidi is expected to do charity work in and around her community.

“So far on August 9 I will visit old age homes around Springs for Women’s Day, handing out gifts to the elderly women.”

She will also be actively involved in children’s homes around Gauteng.

“I will also be involved in helping the Genadeplaas Children’s Home and Louis Botha Children’s Home in raising funds for these kids,” she adds.

She enjoys meeting new people through the pageants she is involved in.

“It surely was an experience to be on the other side for a change as I usually also judge pageants. I now know the feeling each and every contestant goes through entering a pageant like this.”

Even though she is a mother of a talented son, she says she will keep entering pageants.

“It’s an experience and it’s really fun! At my age it’s important to still feel good about yourself. It’s all about dressing up and making a difference.”
