Metro walks against women’s abuse

Friday will see the City of Ekurhuleni acknowledge the significant role played by women in the society as part of its women’s day celebrations.

The city will lead the annual 6km walk at Sam Ntuli Stadium which it will use to encourage people to break the silence on women and children abuse.

Gates will open at 7am for participants from the age of 12 years to older citizens. The first 300 people to finish the race will receive medals.

The city’s activities are part of the nationwide commemorative events to celebrate about 20 000 women of 1956 who stood firmly against the legislation to carry “pass” documents for the oppressed majority.

“Silence is the best ally to domestic abuse, and through this walk the City of Ekurhuleni and its partners are encouraging men, women and children to speak out and break the cycle,” says Ekurhuleni spokesperson Sam Modiba adding that the women of 1956 took power back into their own hands when they marched against pass laws and the women of 2013 should do the same.
