Deja vu at Duck Pond
There have been delays in the repairs of the Duck Pond, resulting in the water levels dropping again.
Residents have been concerned as the water level dropped over the past few weeks.
DA ward councillor for the area Shadow Shabangu says the residents alerted him and he had to take emergency action.
“I had to get the fire services out here and we had to use one of the fire hydrants that services the area in case of an emergency to fill up the pond,” he says.
The installation of the new pump for the pond was supposed to take place three weeks ago, but due to a disagreement between the contractor and the Metro, this process has been delayed again.
“The contractor who was appointed to change the pump also had to remove the old one, but the old one somehow fell into the borehole. He then said the council must supply a crane to remove the old one and the council said he must get his own crane, as he is responsible for the old pump falling,” explains Shabangu.
Metro spokesman Sam Modiba confirmed this, saying during the operation to remove the old pump, the security rope connected to the pump snapped due to its old age and the pump fell.
“The contractor is busy with operations to remove the pump where after, the new one will be installed.”
Shabangu says there are storm water drains leading into the pond, so when it rains, that rain water should be channeled into it, but somewhere in the channel there is a problem and water is not making it into the pond.
“I am going to bring this to the attention of the council. I also want them to redo the island on the middle of the pond and build a new hut on it for the ducks,” says Shabangu.
