According to Rowe, in 2011 the metro replaced her old cast iron meter with a new meter and the new meter has not stopped leaking.
Since the new water meter was installed, Rowe has been receiving numerous high accounts from the municipality.
In Rowe’s opinion she is not using enough water to be charged such high amounts.
Rowe has taken the matter up with the metro on numerous occasions, to no avail.
According to Rowe she feels blackmailed into paying the high amounts because if she doesn’t, her water will be cut off.
Rowe’s water pressure has apparently been affected by the leaking meter as well.
“It’s not nice to struggle to shower and bath. We pay our accounts so why must we struggle?” Rowe asks.
She continues to say,”We are two old people living here, how is it possible that we use so much water?”
She is also concerned about the wall in front of her house collapsing.
“The water is leaking into the foundations of the wall,” she says.
Upon investigation, it could be seen that the wall surrounding the property was indeed unstable.
Lebogang Ramashala, media officer for the metro had this to say in regard to the matter, “A complaint reference number has been issued to the customer with an undertaking that a leak will be repaired by the end of the week.”
He also stated that there is no record of such a complaint on their system but instruction has been issued to address the matter urgently.
