Taxi driver killed at Springs Station Taxi Rank

A taxi driver, Ntsimbane Ngubane (32), was shot dead on Sunday (March 2) at the Springs Station Taxi Rank, while waiting for passengers.

Three local taxi drivers were sitting in the taxi of Ngubane, when the one behind the driver seat noticed someone approaching them from the right.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says three shots were fired.

Ngubane, who was sitting in the driver’s seat got hit three times.

Two bullets hit him in the chest and one bullet went through his cheek.

“One of the bullets that hit Ngubane, went through his body into the man who was sitting next to him,” says Ramphora.

He adds the third man opened the door and ran away.

“Although the shooter also fired a few shot in the escapee’s direction, he was not hit,” says Ramphora.

Later when the man who escaped returned to the taxi rank, he found the police on the scene.

“We are not sure who phoned the family,” says Ramphora.

Paramedics declared the victim dead on the scene.

They took the wounded man to a nearby hospital.

Ramphora adds the reason behind the shooting is yet unknown.

According to a family relative Zowathe Zondo, it is alleged that the deceased found his girlfriend in bed with another man about a week ago.

Ramphora says although speculations are that it might be a love triangle, it cause of the incident is not yet established.

The family arrived on the scene jsut after 7am, and Ngubane’s younger brother Nkanyiso asked everyone to respect their privacy.

“The police will investigate the incident,” he concludes.
