This came to light after the Addie wrote about the open mine shaft a few weeks back.
The mine shaft has been open for a long period of time and the residents feared for the safety of their children.
This mine shaft is about 1km deep with water flowing at the bottom.
Residents were frustrated with the lack of structure and government failure to correct a potentially life-threatening problem.
Inquiries were sent to Ekurhuleni to bring the matter under their attention and action was then taken.
William Ntladi, spokesman of the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, confirms that the area belongs to private owners who need to be engaged in all decisions taken.
“As far as other open mine shafts are concerned, necessary engagements with stake holders have been made and some of the shafts around Ekurhuleni have been closed already.”
Ntladi says unidentified people are regularly re-opening these shafts.
