Things you should never do on social media

Social networking is the new 'way of life' everywhere in the world.

From an early stage, youngsters are introduced to this one way or another.

Few people realise the dangers of posting something disagreeable on their public profiles.

More and more employers are browsing through applicants’ public profiles on their social media to get an idea of who they are and their qualities, before even arranging an interview, deciding there and then whether they are a fitting candidate or not.

Think twice before posting something that someone else might deem insulting, there could be disastrous legal consequences.

Remember, the internet is forever.

Here is what not to do on any social media platform.

  • Post illegal activities

Images of children in inappropriate poses or engaging in sexual activity is a major taboo and it is illegal to be involved in distribution of such images.

Underage drinking is usually the worst offender as teenagers boast about their weekend of partying, drinking or using other illegal substances.

This can get you in real trouble.

  • Bullying

Cyber-bullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology, such as cell phones, computers and other devices on social media sites.

This includes mean texts and defamatory statements aimed at a specific person.

These tools can seriously damage other people’s emotions and perhaps even their reputation and can also cause legal action to be taken.

  • Trash other people

Bad-mouthing someone on social media, because they did something bad or hurtful to you, should be avoided at all costs as you can be sued for libel or defamation.

Do not make your opinion of someone public on a social site.

  • Post confidential information
  • Never rely on privacy settings

This is very easy, do not post something on the web that you do not want to be seen and that can get you in trouble.

  • Post emotionally

This is quite an obvious point, but still ignored by many people.

If you post something in anger, you are bound to get in trouble when it is seen by the wrong people.

Take a moment to breathe, think and reboot to avoid legal problems in the future.
