Emily retires after 30 years

Emily Vilakazi (64) is retiring this month after 31 years of service at the SpringsCare Community Centre, previously known as the Springs Senior Citizens' Club.

She started working at the club in 1983 as a general worker and was soon promoted to work in the kitchen.

It was where she felt most at home and where she helped to prepare numerous meals for the senior citizens.

Working at the club for so many years, she has met wonderful people, some who have already died, who she will never forget.

For the past year since the Lodeyko Methodist Church took over the club, she had to adapt to many changes, but still did her job with the same passion as always.

She says although the club was like a second home to her, she will not miss the place, but definitely the people.

Someone very dear to Emily is her co-worker Patricia Sibiya, who has been part of the kitchen staff for the past 12 years.

“I will miss her the most as she was my friend at work.”

Margarette McCreath, the chairman of the club, says she hopes anything Emily will do in the future will end well.

“She is a lovely woman and a wonderful cook, was always willing and helpful.”

At the last bingo event held at the club last Tuesday, everyone was sad as it was the last function Emily served lunch to her friends.

Emily’s last day will be on December 12 and she will be moving to her family in Tsakane.
