After the Addie reported on several occasions about the open manhole, the metro suspects that the covers were stolen.
Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro says the matter has been investigated and found the manholes open.
“It is suspected that the covers were stolen, however, the two round manhole covers have been replaced.” says Gadebe.
He says the other two, which were reported, are chambers for an old pipe line that are no longer functional.
These will be replaced by December 15.
In April, a woman who was visiting her husband’s grave, did not see the open manhole covered in leaves and sustained damage to her vehicle.
At the time of the incident the metro said the city’s roads department had placed an order to replace the missing manhole at Geduld Cemetery and red tape would be placed near the hole to warn the public and prevent damage to other vehicles.
Upon investigation in May it was discovered that this was not done and metro was again informed of the problem.
