Local wrestler on his way to Greece
The Hoërskool Hugenote learner is one of five wrestlers who will be representing South Africa in Greece.
Springs wrestling champion Fernando Booysen (15) will represent South Africa at the Cadet World Wrestling Championships in Greece, from August 9 to September 11.
Shaun Bartlett, treasurer of the SA Wrestling Federation, says Fernando is a promising young athlete.
He says Fernando proved he can compete against the best in the world when he qualified at the recent Cadet Continental Championships in Morocco.
Fernando has been included in the South African team of five wrestlers and will compete in the u-42kg category.
Hansie Kruger from Mpumalanga was selected as the team coach.
The team managers are yet to be announced.
Dirk Booysen says he is proud of his son’s wrestling career.
He says his son’s strength and confidence are growing as he faces new challenges.
“He works hard and has achieved a lot over the past few years,” says Dirk.
Fernando has 17 South African wrestling titles to his name.
He is the current u-15 South African Youth Greek-Roman champion as well as the u-15 SA Youth Freestyle champion.
