No fixed speed cameras in Springs
Mobile speed camera enforcement will remain in Springs until TCSP guidelines are adhered to.
As compared to other areas in Ekurhuleni, Springs only has speed traps on various major roads such as Paul Kruger, Springs West Road and Delmas Road, to name a few.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, says currently there are no fixed speed cameras in the Springs area. Only mobile speed cameras are enforced.
Kgasago says the necessary speed and camera signs will be erected before the commencement of speed camera operations as per Traffic Control and Traffic Control Equipment (TCSP) guidelines from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Thobeka Dladla from Springs says the issue of erecting speed cameras in Springs should be attended to urgently judging from the high speeds motorists travel by, especially in Nigel road.
“Time and again there’s an accident in Nigel road because of unlawful citizens who take advantage of the fact that the road has no fixed cameras,” says Dladla.
“People who speed don’t respect other motorists travelling at maximum speed limit which also causes accidents on the roads.”
The EMPD installed speed traps due to a number of fatalities encountered.
Besides speed traps, there are roads that have fixed cameras. The main intention by EMPD is to preserve and protect loss of life.
