The Probus Club of Springs recently visited a little-known gem in Wattville, Benoni.

The OR Tambo Cultural Precinct is an exhibition cum environmental education centre situated on the banks of the Leeupan Wetland and highlights the rich legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo and his stature as a leader.

The Tambos lived in the community of Wattville from 1948 until Oliver went into exile in 1960 and then again on his return to South Africa in 1991.

They are buried in the Tamboville Cemetery close by and their gravesite has been declared a national heritage site.

The precinct comprises the OR Tambo Narrative Centre which interprets his life, a craft centre where pottery is produced and sold, an amphitheatre for live cultural events, and an environmental education centre whose primary aim is to raise awareness on environmental programmes to schools, local communities and industries.

After a two and a half hour tour on South African history, heritage and art by a very knowledgeable guide, it was unanimously agreed it was time well spent.
