Residents of Molendam feel unsafe
Many cars have been broken into and vandalised over the past year.
Residents of Molendam no longer feel safe in their homes and the municipality has failed to deliver on their promises numerous times.
Molendam is a municipal housing project in Lodeyko where mostly elderly people live.
The motor of the front gate of the housing complex is broken and has to be opened and closed manually and a chain is required to lock it at night.
According to resident Patrys Nieman, the municipality has promised to fix the gate, but have yet to do so.
“It has been months since the gate broke.
“We are old people living here and we don’t feel safe.
“We cannot go on like this,” says Nieman.

Many cars have been broken into and vandalised over the past year.
Last year, resident Tienie Barnard’s car was broken into and vandalised, there was a broken window, a stolen battery, cut ignition wires and a broken boot lock.
In order to protect their cars, residents had garages built at their own cost where they park and keep equipment.
These garages, however, are being broken into at night.
Thieves cut the palisades to gain access to the garage and loot the items inside.
“These break-ins have been happening since 2005, thieves jump over the walls at night.
“We all have to be in bed by eight when they lock the gate.
“We can’t have people over anymore because they don’t feel safe,” says Nieman.
Some of the houses have broken ceiling boards and residents feel this poses a danger as they could fall on residents and injure them.
A media inquiry has been sent to the metro.
