Love is still strong after 50 years

Couple share secrets to their 50 year marriage.

The couple got married in the United Kingdom in 1969 and have been happily married ever since.

“They were giving me a hard time there, but they were very impressed when they saw my 1942 Ford,” says John.

However, it was not always easy.

“When we were young in the UK we were struggling financially but still managed to raise three kids.”

Tragedy struck the family when they lost one of their sons in a motorcycle accident. It was one of the challenges in their marriage that also strengthened their bond and love.

“Things like that often lead to divorces and people splitting up, but we were there for each other through it all,” adds John.

John and Lynn immigrated to South Africa in 1983 for work and have stayed here ever since.

“It was very difficult for us.

“We left everything over there including our family, but the friends we made here became our family.”

When asked about marriage advice, especially to young people getting married, John says, “Youngsters expect too much too soon, and much of that has a lot to do with finances.

“We didn’t have any money but we just had to go on with it.”

Lynn says her love for John never diminished over the years, “I fell in love with him very quickly and I still do to this day.

“His sense of humour is also lovely and he makes me laugh every day”.

John says his greatest admiration for Lynn has always been the way she looked after him and their children during the toughest of times.
