Strubenvale Ext residents frustrated by lack of service
Municipal, Strubenvale Ext, services, sewage, refuse removal, street lights, Siphokazi Zama.
Strubenvale Extension residents allege the metro has been neglecting them.
This comes after numerous complaints, often about the same issue, have been left unattended.
The sewage that flows down Von Alften Street is testament to that.

The sewage overflow happens every time it rains and was reported by residents five months ago to the metro.
Jinx Terblans says the leak is hazardous to residents, especially the children, who often play in the water.
“Residents are constantly sick and don’t get better.
“This blocked sewage drain was again reported during the week, but no reference number was received.
“Ekurhuleni came out and I saw them [contractors] get out of their bakkie stand around for a couple of minutes and then left,” says Terblans.

Neighbours echoed Terblans’s statement and say they have been to the metro to report the same issue, only to find out the reference number was closed and the job marked as done, but nothing was done.
Residents say they are concerned about the sewage overflow as it is not only a health hazard, but an environmental one as well as the water from the drain eventually flows into the Blesbokspruit.
In addition to the sewage problem, the residents also have a problem with refuse removal.
When the metro does come to pick up refuse, not all their bins are emptied.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) was garbage collection day in our neighborhood, when I saw the garbage truck in front of our house I went out to collect the empty bin.
“When I got to the bin, it was not emptied, so I chased after the truck which has already moved up the street a couple of houses and asked the guys why did they not empty our bin as this is a service we pay for.
“The guy said I must ask the lady, as I understand, who was in charge of emptying the bins on our side of the street; she very rudely informed me that she did not empty my bin because it was not ‘full’ enough.
“The following morning I placed my bin outside and it was almost overflowing with garbage, but the recycling people collecting the plastic came and took some plastic out of the bins as they always do, but when I explained this to her, she said it is not her problem and that I must report the matter to her superior and then she got onto the truck and off they went,” says Terblans.

Terblans says she is disgusted by the treatment she received from the metro and feels it is unfair as she does not get the option to pay for half the services, considering the metro provides them with half the services. This, Terblans and neighbours say, is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the services they don’t get from the metro.
“Our street lights are either burning all the time or not at all, and the grass in our parks has not been cut for a long time,” says Terblans.
The metro failed to respond in time for publication, but The Addie will follow up on the issue.
