Eastvale park neglected by metro

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says the contractor has not completed the work because the swings have not been fitted and he will follow up with the relevant people.

Residents in Eastvale are worried about the state of the park on the corner of Lainsberg and Daskkenstein – is this supposed to be Drakenstein? roads.

The park, which was upgraded recently to include exercise equipment and picnic areas, has become derelict over the past few weeks as the metro has seemingly neglected it.

The grass is overgrown and there is litter all over.

Eastvale CPF chairperson Herman Marais says,“Many of the parents are present when the children visit, but they do not take control and then there are also drug deals done there.

“My question is why go all the way to do upgrades and then and neglect on maintaining the park,” asks Marais.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says the contractor has not completed the work because the swings have not been fitted and will follow up with the relevant people.

Litter is a common sight around the park which appears to have been neglected over the past few weeks.

“Residents have to take ownership of the park equipment and protect them as if it’s their own.

“The grass will be cut. The contractors were on leave and will be returning this month and it should be attended to shortly.

“It’s impossible for the municipality to police the park day and night and residents need to report any unruly and vandalistic behaviour to the police, EMPD or to the call centre.

“Drinking and taking drugs in public spaces are not allowed according to council by-laws, and offenders are liable to a fine and arrest.”

Sheodin added that children need those facilities and residents should help safeguard it.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
