Residents demand humps at dangerous intersection

Van Rhyn says it would be helpful if a weight restriction was placed on the road with trucks bigger than three tons not allowed.

Residents in Geduld fear there is an accident waiting to happen at the dangerous intersection between First Avenue and 5th Street.

Leon van Rhyn says motorists do not stop at the intersection despite there being a stop sign.

“The biggest culprits are the trucks.

“From around 4am, they speed down First Avenue, and then again from 7pm to 8pm,” says van Rhyn.

Van Rhyn fears the intersection is a tragedy waiting to happen given the speed at which the trucks are travelling at.

Additionally, van Rhyn says residents submitted a petition to the metro asking for speed humps, but were turned down as the rules say you cannot have a stop sign and speed humps close together.

“I disagree with that assessment by the metro.

“In Escombe Street in Brakpan, they have both, so there is a precedent.

“Speed humps would also be the most cost-effective option for the metro,” says van Rhn.

Shadow councillor Lorna Beharie says she will be in touch with the metro and EMPD about the possibility of site visit so a study can be done.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
