Thereafter, the patient was forced to sleep on the floor until the next day to be admitted as there was no bed available for her.

A woman was allegedly forced to sleep on the floor at Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) on Wednesday night.

According to the patient’s daughter, the patient was admitted to the hospital on Monday for an operation on her leg following a break.

The operation was a success and the patient was released the following Tuesday.

However, on Wednesday morning the patient started to bleed from her leg and was admitted to emergency rescue.

According to the patient’s daughter, they had to wait until 4pm to see a doctor.

Thereafter, the patient was forced to sleep on the floor until the next day to be admitted as there was no bed available for her to sleep in.

The hospital denies the allegations and communications officer Phumza Ntuthuka responded with the following statement:

“The patient was not forced to sleep on the floor.

“On admission, all patients are informed of the shortage of beds in the ward because of overcrowding and it is up to the patient to agree to be admitted under the circumstances.

“However, because our doctors do ward rounds more frequently, as soon as there is a bed available the patient is given one.

“We acknowledge the fact that we have a challenge of staff shortage; however, all the health care workers who are on duty work to ensure they provide the best patient care to all the patients in the ward.”
