The Addie sat down with the new minister to learn more about him.
When did you first get into ministry?
I have been in ministry since the 1980s.
I studied theology at Rhodes University, then I started doing some part-time ministry while completing my Masters in Potchefstroom.
What message would you like to bring to the people of Springs?
I see myself primarily as a teacher of the Word of God and a shepherd of the flock.
I also want to inspire hope in the community and help people find their calling and passion.
What experience do you bring with you?
I grew up in Northern Ireland during a period known as the Troubles and I also lived in Zimbabwe for a while, so I know what it’s like to work with divided communities.
A major focus for me will be on spreading a message of hope and unity.
I have seen many parts of the world and they have been formative years in my ministry.
What are some things the Springs community should know about you?
They should know that they are all welcome at this church and my door is always open for everyone.
I am also a major Liverpool fan.
Reverend Barry has a PhD in theology and likes to write, read and paint in his free time.
His wife, Beverly, is a teacher at Summit Park High School.
